Vielen Menschen dürfte das Azure Window ein Begriff sein. Entweder haben sie das markante Felsentor auf der Mittelmeerinsel Gozo schon selbst besucht, oder haben es als Kulisse beispielsweise der Serie "Game of Thrones" wahrgenommen. Der fast 100 Meter lange und 20 Meter hohe natürlich geformte Torbogen galt als einer der letzten Überbleibsel einer Landbrücke zwischen Europa und Afrika, die vor etwa 13.000 Jahren unterbrochen wurde. Kurz vor 10 Uhr des 8. März 2017 ist das "Blaue Fenster" vor den Augen einiger Touristen in sich zusammengebrochen. Heftige Winde und meterhohe Wellen sollen für den endgültigen Einsturz gesorgt haben. Bereits im vergangenen Jahr war bei stürmischer See ein Stück des natürlichen Torbogens abgebrochen. Erst im Januar hatten die maltesischen Behörden das Betreten der Felsformation untersagt und sogar unter Strafe gestellt.
