A Camera's Odyssey A Camera's Odyssey

Our GEO Special magazine is turning 30. We would like to celebrate this anniversary with a fascinating, unique story. A story as big and as beautiful as the whole world. And you can help us to achieve it.

The Idea

Three digital cameras, with pure chance as their guide, are travelling the world. Having hit the road in Hamburg, Germany, the cameras are equipped with GPS sensors to record the many paths they will tread. Already, three travellers have each taken a camera: one to Bali, one to Brazil and one to Tanzania.

In Olympic torch style, the cameras are being passed from one traveller to another – until they circle the globe. What sights will these cameras see on their world tour, what elements will they brave? How far will they travel on their epic journeys? And which camera wins in milage? To those lucky enough to get a camera: Join the adventure! Help our cameras capture every corner of the earth. Your view makes the difference.

A Camera's Odyssey

Three digital cameras, with pure chance as their guide, have been travelling the world during the past month. Now they are back in Germany - after 141 946 kilometers

The Rules

1. Take the camera.

2. Notify us when someone hands the camera over to you. Please send a short email with your name to odyssey@geo.de, subject heading: camera odyssey. Then you will receive the password to upload video and photos.

3. Shoot a self-portrait.

4. Take other photos – of yourself, of people you meet, landscapes, weird and wonderful situations, food... Minimum: ten photos, maximum: fifty! Make sure the GPS-Setting of your camera is "on" all the time.

5. If possible, make a short video in which you introduce yourself to our followers: name, age, where you have been, where you are going, wisdom acquired on the road...

6. Keep the camera for a maximum of ten days. After that: leave your favorite shots on the camera’s memory card (also leave the old shots other people have taken) – and upload them

The Reward

Honor and glory! The best photos will be published in our anniversary issue and the happy snappers responsible will receive good payment for their images. We will put all the uploaded photos you take with the camera on a DVD and send it along with some high-quality prints to your home address – including a copy of GEO Special’s anniversary issue. Once the cameras make it back home to our office they will be raffled off among all participating globetrotters. We will also raffle off a 1000-Euro-voucher which the winner can invest in his/her next journey.

The Camera

Make sure that the camera's Time and Date is set correctly, the GPS-Setting is "on" and the Record Lat/Long-Setting is "on". Leaving the camera with no power supplied while the battery is dead or is being replaced will cause its date and time settings to be cleared. A message telling you to configure time and date settings will appear the next time you turn on the camera after restoring power.

Please also check GPS-Reception before shooting. An icon on the display shows current GPS signal conditions. If problems occur please do not hesitate to contact us any time: odyssey@geo.de. And one last thing: The format operation will delete all contents, so please never ever do this!

A Camera's Odyssey: Please check the camera package includes all of the following items: 1 Digital camera, 1 Charger unit + 1 Power cord, 1 Battery, 1 USB cable, 1 Spare battery + 1 spare 8-GB-Memory-Card.
